Translation, according to Umberto Eco, is a ‘negotiation’ between different and even opposite systems and beliefs, and is always anchored in space and time. In Emily Apter’s terms, translation is a ‘zone’ with geographic, socio-political, and psychological dimensions. This three-day seminar series and writing workshop will explore the many ways in which translation and architecture meet. The very translatability of architecture is interrogated in the light of institutional, legal and economic constraints, cultural specificities and political ideologies. If architecture in its multiple material appropriations becomes entangled in a process in which ideas of home, interiority, domesticity, privacy, the foreign, the exterior and the public are constantly constructed and deconstructed the city in its often irreconcilable forms of power bequeaths to us the most acute site of translation. It is in these locutions and dis-locutions that the forces of translation can be traced, criss-crossing but also tactically interrupting cultural codifications.
